The school is managed
by a Board of Governors. The Governors are elected from
the parent body. A management team ensures that the school
buildings and their environs are well maintained at all
times.
The Head of International
Preparatory School, Mrs. Ida Coombes, has had extensive
primary teaching experience gained in five different countries
including Mauritius. In addition to founding the school,
she has devised the curriculum to be followed. IPS keep
in close contact with international curriculum developments
through subscriptions to educational periodicals from England,
Australia and the U.S.A. Teachers also attend seminars overseas
and University Summer Courses.
The school is well equipped
with among other things a media centre and computer room,
but these cannot replace a trained, dedicated and caring
staff. Staff members are encouraged to use their own initiative
in their approach to lessons and classes. They are funded
to improve their teaching skills and are expected to keep
abreast of new developments in their fspecific field.
A school cannot work
successfully without the support and understanding of parents.
Both home and school have their parts to play in the education
of the child and it is essential that the relationship between
the two should be close and harmonious. Parents are therefore
always welcome at the school and are encouraged to come
and consult teachers on their children's progress whenever
they feel the need. These meetings are of course pre-arranged
either through the school secretary.
Parents are given the
opportunity to view their children's work and discuss it
with the teachers at the open days which are held at the
end of each term.
Children are grouped
according to their ages into the following seven sections:
Nursery age 3 / 4
Reception age 4 / 5
Class 1 age 5 / 6
Class 2 age 6 / 7
Class 3 age 7 / 8
Class 4 age 8 / 9
Class 5 age 9/ 10
Class 6 age 10/11
Class 7 age 11+(*)
(*) Pupils going
on to Le Bocage International High School
We have this term for these pupils who choose Le Bocage
as it has a southern hemisphere scholastic year while IPS
operates on a northern hemisphere scholastic year.
IPS is a feeder prep
school to the two international high schools on the island,
Northfields International and Le Bocage.
The school's policy
is to try and maintain a maximum of 25/30 pupils in each
class so that the individual needs of each child can be
met by the staff. This gives the teachers the time to help
the less confident pupils and to encourage them to participate
and to develop to their full potential. Gifted children's
needs are also catered for as these need to be channelled
and encouraged.
Children should
be challenged to think critically and constructively and
to be sensitive to their role in the wider community at
all times.
